BCPS – Hanen Centre
A crucial part to development for preschool aged children is the development of social and communication skills. We are excited to announce that effective the summer of 2016, we have partnered with the speech/language department from Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) to bring the Hanen Centre Program to Davenport. The mission of the Hanen Centre is to provide parent, caregivers, early childhood educators and speech-language pathologists with the knowledge and training needed to help young children develop the best possible language, social, and literacy skills. This includes children with or at risk of language delays and those with developmental challenges such as Autism Spectrum Disorder. It can also assist typically developing children with enhancing their skills as well.
The Hanen certified speech-language pathologist from BCPS will be utilizing space at Davenport to work with children with communication delays from outside the school. A teacher and six children from Davenport will work with them on a rotating basis in order to provide typical peer role models for these children as well as give the teachers an opportunity to learn the strategies of the program so that they may infuse them into their own classrooms. As a result, as demonstrated by research, all children at Davenport will benefit from this inclusive program.
